Fires are the #2 cause of accidental death in the home. If one occurs in your home, do you know what to do, who to call, and when?

What to do in case of a fire

Few fires start big. Many fires become big within minutes. And by “big,” we simply mean too big a fire for a person to extinguish in a few seconds. You may be surprised by how small a fire that can be! The catastrophic results can be tragic if you do not quickly size up the situation.

When a fire occurs, you have just seconds to make a decision. If you know what to do, you might be able to put it out. Training and practice help. (Remember those fire drills? There was a reason for them -- their true importances become apparent only when a real fire erupts.) If you catch the fire in its first few seconds and have the proper fire extinguisher (that you already know how to use), the extinguisher may be sufficient. But we repeat -- you have only seconds to act ... minutes may be too late!

If there’s the slightest question, call the Fire Department IMMEDIATELY. If someone else is there, have them phone 911 while you deal with the fire (assuming they are in a safe location). All other occupants should leave, and you should be ready to do so at the instant you find you’re unable to extinguish the fire.

Flames are not the only danger to you. Fires break produce chemical breakdown reactions in a wide variety of modern products -- the construction materials, finishes, glues, plastics, furniture, solvents and other things that make up modern life. The resulting toxic smoke and fumes can be extremely harmful to you, for years to come.

What to do after a fire?

The effects of smoke and fumes from toxic materials can also be harmful to the structure, even after the fire is out and smoke has cleared from the air. Smoke odor, alone, becomes a tenacious “resident,” very difficult to evict.

A fire loss is devastating and complex because of the way smoke and smoke residues behave. Hot smoke travels upward so, even if the fire was confined to a lower floor, there will be smoke effects upstairs. Smoke even moves through the holes made for plumbing and other conduits, affecting level after level of your home or business.

The restoration process must be extensive, and will vary depending on the type of smoke involved. Our trained technicians understand these qualities intimately, enabling us to effectively handle damage from smoke, soot and other fire by-products.

Various types of smoke and soot have differing qualities,

What we do in case of fire/smoke damage

First we determine what kind(s) of smoke it was. This enables us to choose the most effective cleaning method. We then eliminate smoke odor and soot. We clean up the entire indoor environment, including everything that will stay in it. Everything that was subjected to smoke contains the smell and evidence of fire. So we remove that odor and evidence from items such as valuable electronic equipment, furniture, books, documents, artwork, machinery and more.

What cannot be efficiently or cost-effectively restored should be replaced. Trust our experience in helping to make those decisions, and know that if anyone can minimize the need for disposal, we can.

Our specialists also test for toxic gases and materials, using state-of-the-art technology. We identify hazardous chemicals and remove them from the scene of a fire. In addition, we locate any hazardous materials and contain them, so these won’t become an additional danger.

As part of our process, we will assist in determining the condition of the property before the damage occurred, so you will be better able to recover to the full extent of your loss.
